something hits Kara’s back. She turns around. A boy is floating next to her. He has not even seen Kara.
Rose and Julie giggle when the boy’s head bumps into Kara again. He gives a start and stands up.
“Oops, sorry,” he smiles at Kara. “I didn’t see you.”
“That’s okay,” Kara quickly says. They stand in front of each other. They are exactly the same height.
Kara thinks they might be the same age as well. His hair is kind of long and his eyes are blue. Very blue.
“It’s because of the current.” The boy points across the water. “It’s really fun floating with the current, because you never know where you’ll end up.”
His skin is tan, as if he has been on holiday somewhere warm. He is cute. Really cute.
“Okay,” Kara says and suddenly feels shy, because she is not used to strange boys talking to her.
“Do you want to see?” the boy asks.
Kara nods. She can feel Julie, Rose, and Malou looking at them from where they are standing.
The boy lies on his back and just as he said, he starts floating. He splashes his arms around and stands up again.
“Isn’t it fun?” he asks Kara.
The boy keeps on looking at her. It is almost as if they already know each other.
Kara cannot stop smiling.
“I’m Kara,” it flies out of her and she immediately regrets saying her name. It seems so lame.
