John Locke

Who is John Locke

John Locke was an English philosopher and physician who is largely considered to be one of the most significant intellectuals of the Enlightenment period. He is also commonly referred to as the “father of liberalism.” Locke, who is considered to be one of the earliest British empiricists and who followed in the footsteps of Francis Bacon, is also considered to be of similar significance to the philosophy of social contract. His contributions had a significant impact on the evolution of epistemology as well as historical political philosophy. The writings of this individual had an impact on the likes of Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as a great number of Scottish Enlightenment intellectuals and the American Revolutionaries. The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America is a reflection of his contributions to liberal theory and classical republicanism. At the global level, Locke's political-legal concepts continue to exert a significant impact on the theory and practice of limited representative government, as well as on the safeguarding of fundamental rights and liberties in accordance with the rule of law.
