<!doctype html public «-//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en»> http-equiv=content-type> In 1933, the German architect and China scholar Ernst Boerschmann visited the cities of Hong Kong, Macau and Canton (Guangzhou) and documented their transformation into functionally divided major cities. Boerschmann’s unpublished descriptions of a radical change in the structure of a city still have resonance 80 years later, and many of his observations can be seen once more in today’s construction boom in the cities of the Pearl River delta.
