Picaro could be described as a coming-of-age novel. It features a young man, Enrique Langhorne, who when the first world war begins leaves his father's Californian estate and goes to France to serve as a pilot. The novel transports us to France and also to Spain with a real sense of realism since the author knew both these countries well.
