‘They all broke the rules. They all crossed into forbidden territory. They all tampered with the laws that lay down who should be loved, and how. And how much.’
This is the story of Rahel and Estha, twins growing up among the banana vats and peppercorns of their blind grandmother’s factory, and amid scenes of political turbulence in Kerala. Armed only with the innocence of youth, they fashion a childhood in the shade of the wreck that is their family: their lonely, lovely mother, their beloved Uncle Chacko (pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher) and their sworn enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun, incumbent grand-aunt).
Arundhati Roy’s Booker Prize-winning novel was the literary sensation of the 1990s: a story anchored to anguish but fuelled by wit and magic.

Волшебная, невероятная и в тоже время совершенно реальная история мастерски рассказанная Арундати Рой. Одно из самых сильных моих впечатлений этого книжного года.

Очень, очень сильная книга, мудрая, глубокая. И написана очень хорошо

This is the story that follow the life of the twins Rahel and Estha, and a disaster that change their lives forever. It also give us the perspective of their closer relatives and their community.
Each of the character had a level of suffering and pain that leads to a sad chronicle.
The author describe the background of the story in a vivid manner, the characters were interesting in their own narrative. The story also incorporates a political and cultural scene.

I really tried to like this book but sadly I just didn't. The moving from past to present to further past, deepening of each character that add so little to the main plot made me dislike this story. I felt that the story could have been told in the first two chapters.

I gave it 1/5. But I'll try to read this book in the future.

is curious how sometimes the memory of death lives on for so much longer than the memory of the life that it purloined.
Dissolute bluebottles hum vacuously in the fruity air. Then they stun themselves against clear windowpanes and die, fatly baffled in the sun.
t didn’t matter that the story had begun, because kathakali discovered long ago that the secret of the Great Stories is that they have no secrets. The Great Stories are the ones you have heard and want to hear again. The ones you can enter anywhere and inhabit comfortably. They don’t deceive you with thrills and trick endings. They don’t surprise you with the unforeseen.
