Tooth decay which is also known as dental cavities refers to the damage to the enamel (which is the hard white substance on the teeth). This is caused by bacteria which feeds on carbohydrates and glucose and turn them into acids which in turn destroys the teeth. The bacteria feed by transforming sugar to lactic acid, causing an imbalance in the body ph. and transforming food that sticks to the tooth into plaque.
