Fernanda Melchor is a prominent Mexican writer best recognized for her novel Hurricane Season, which earned her international accolades, including the 2019 Anna Seghers Prize and a shortlist position for the 2020 International Booker Prize.
Fernanda Melchor was born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico. She pursued a degree in Journalism at the Universidad Veracruzana, where she also served as the Coordinator of Communication. Her career as a writer began with the publication of her book Aquí no es Miami (This Is Not Miami) in 2013, a collection of literary journalism that examines the crime and folklore in her native state. That same year, she published her first novel, Falsa Liebre.
Her Hurricane Season delves into the dark corners of a small Mexican village following the murder of a witch, drawing acclaim for its raw and powerful narrative. This novel was translated into several languages.
In 2015, Melchor was honored in a Conaculta anthology as one of the noteworthy Mexican authors under 40, further solidifying her status in the literary community. She also won the 2018 PEN Mexico Award for Literary and Journalistic Excellence for blending journalistic techniques with literary storytelling.
Her 2021 novel Paradais examines the explosive frustrations of youth against a backdrop of extreme social inequality, earning a longlist nomination for the 2022 International Booker Prize. Her engaging style and thematic depth were again recognized in 2023 when the English translation of This Is Not Miami was longlisted for the National Book Award for Translated Literature.
