Amanda Cockrell

Amanda Cockrell is an American professor of English and author specializing in children's literature and creative writing. She wrote historical and young adult novels. Cockrell also publishes books under the pseudonym Damion Hunter.

Amanda Cockrell was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Ojai, California. Her father, Francis M. Cockrell, worked as a screenwriter, while her mother, Marian Cockrell, pursued a career as both a screenwriter and a novelist.

Ojai hosted numerous philosophical and religious movements that had arrived in California since the 1920s. Amanda adored the town, and it became the blueprint for Ayala, the backdrop of several of her books.

Her initial attempts at writing took shape during her high school years. Her high school English teacher, J.B. Close, candidly remarked that the characters she created lacked depth.

Cockrell has attained a master's degree in English and creative writing from Hollins College. The institution boasted a remarkable writing program dedicated to nurturing students' authentic voices, urging them to write as themselves rather than imitating their creative writing professors.

As writing was her sole area of expertise, Amanda Cockrell made a career around it in various forms throughout her life.

In addition to her novels, she penned a plethora of other works. She crafted radio commercials, wrote local history, book reviews, obituaries, wedding stories, and even a paperback plantation saga under a pseudonym.

Amanda Cockrell debuted with Legions of the Mist in 1979. Since then, she has written several novels about the Romans.

Her first young adult novel, What We Keep Is Not Always What Will Stay(2011) named one of the best children's books of the year by The Boston Globe.

Additionally, she received fiction fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

For numerous years, Amanda Cockrell taught creative writing at Hollins University. Now, she is the managing editor of the university's esteemed literary journal, The Hollins Critic.

Amanda Cockrell resided with her husband in Roanoke, Virginia.
